AMC - 8 EXAM
|
The American Mathematics Competition (AMC) is open to all math students who desire a chance to test their math skills. This annual exam is administered to approximately 300,000 middle schoolers across the U.S., including more than 75 TEMS students. This exam has a week-long test window in mid-January. It works in conjunction with MathCounts scheduling as the exam is given during the school day. This timed, multiple choice exam is extremely challenging!

DEBATE CLUB
|
All Timothy Edwards Middle School students are welcome to join the TE Debate Club. Participants can decide how involved they become in debating by simply observing a few debates or joining a group of three and debating against other schools in a year-long series of debates, sponsored by the Connecticut Middle School Debate League (CTMSDL). The debate club runs all year long and establishes Thursdays, after school as meeting days

ENTERTAINERS

Students work on stage and behind the scenes to produce professional-level musical productions. The club begins in November and culminates with the production (usually March), meeting on Monday’s, Wednesday’s and Thursday’s.

GRADE 6 STOCK MARKET GAME
|
Every fall, all interested grade 6 students are invited to participate in a ten-week Stock Market Game club. The club usually starts in late Sept./early Oct. and runs through early December. Typically meets on Mondays. Students can work alone or in small teams learning to purchase stocks, bonds and mutual funds. Each team is provided with a 'mock' $100,000 portfolio and can choose from a variety of investments.

JAZZ BAND
|
The Timothy Edwards Middle School Jazz Ensemble is an award winning ensemble with a long standing history of excellence. Students who participate in the ensemble must be in good academic standing and be prepared for regular rehearsals and individual practice. The ensemble is by audition only and open to any TE student that plays piano, bass, drum set, guitar, trumpet, trombone, saxophone and flute. This advanced ensemble typically meets twice a week before school on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The audition process is announced on the TE morning news.

LITERARY MAGAZINE

Out of the Blue is TEMS’s award winning literary magazine! Our team meets after school every Monday. In addition to the creation of our annual issue, the Out of the Blue staff is always working together to improve our own writing and artistic craft and flex our creative muscles. Keep an eye out for opportunities to submit your own work for publication or contact Ms. Olsen to join the fun!

MATHCOUNTS
|
All TEMS math students are welcome to join MathCOUNTS, which typically meets on Friday mornings before school in the TEMS cafeteria. MathCOUNTS typically begins in late October and wraps up with a set of tests in late January/early February to determine a small group of students who represent TE at regional and statewide competitions.

MATINEE
|
Staff members offer high-interest activities after school. Sessions are offered in the fall, winter and spring. Information will be sent home in School Messenger, and sign ups are completed online through SignUpGenius.

OUTDOOR EDUCATION CLUB
|
This is an after school activity where students can participate in a variety of activities such as hikes, bowling, skating and other outdoor activities. School announcements will be made on the morning news when events are hosted.

ROBOTICS
|
Students in the TE Robotics Club work together to build a robot to play a game. Students are split into different teams to build, program and control a robot that will compete in the TE Championship. Students learn how to build using VEX robotics kits, learn how to program in VEXCode and a lot about teamwork.

SAGA
|
SAGA is a student-led club. This is a club where students belonging to the LGBTQIA+ community and their Allies will find support, social events, educational opportunities, games and activities, and community. The main objectives of SAGA are to provide a space where all students feel welcome and focus on ideas and activities that positively impact our school and community. Meetings are usually 1-2 times per month on Thursdays. Schedule is released each semester.

Spotlight is our award-winning show choir! Each year, this ensemble performs in several concerts and a music festival. Auditions are held in October, with Thursday evening rehearsals continuing throughout the rest of the school year. Any TEMS student who loves to sing and dance is encouraged to audition

STUDENT COUNCIL

Students are elected by their peers at the beginning of the school year to be their homeroom’s student council representative. Representatives are placed on committees and work on projects including fundraisers, community service projects and special events in school such as cross-grade competitions. The Student Council meets Wednesdays before school.

UCONN WRITING CLUB
|
Students from 6th, 7th, and 8th grades will meet to work on writing and art projects to submit to the Connecticut Writing Project yearly contest, part of the National Writing Project. Students will have the opportunity to meet with dedicated teachers to review their work and receive feedback. While the goal of the writing project is to improve writing skills, it should be noted that this is not an extra help club. Students will be working on a piece they've already started or will create a new one in a space that provides inspiration and a comfortable area to think and work. To date, dozens of TEMS students have been recognized and awarded for their writing and art through this contest. The club usually begins in the fall.

Students from 6th, 7th, and 8th grades work together with yearbook advisor Ms. Gravell in room 123 every other Thursday afternoon to produce the best yearbook EVER! Updates about meetings are posted continuously in our Google classroom.
